Program Overview
Aims:
The Graduate Program in Education, at Master’s level, aims at training teachers in education able to think and act critically on the Brazilian educational reality and specifically:
1. train teachers and researchers interested in questioning and intervening in the Brazilian educational reality, able to mobilize the knowledge of theory and academic practice to propose and implement alternative projects to educational problems within the institutions and educational systems;
2. constitute a reflection on teaching, to encourage their formation and bring repercussions on the educational practices of teachers;
3. enable the development of research for reflection on education as a political phenomenon;
4. promote the dissemination of knowledge on education through dialogue between the different agents involved in making education.
History:
The establishment of the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE), in 2008, with the recommendation of CAPES, is an important initiative in the state of Minas Gerais, responding to a regional demand for graduate in this area. The activities of the course began in March 2009, and the first Master’s thesis defense of the program was Barbara Lima Giardini on February 25th, 2011.

The Graduate Program in Education of UFV is the most popular and competitive of the institution, this being an indicative of the importance of such program not only for UFV, but also for the region and for the state of Minas Gerais. The increasing demand of new applicants each year, has required that the program broaden the number of positions for the Master. Historically, therefore, from 2009 to 2011 were offered 12 positions in the selective process; from 2012 to 2014 we offered 20 positions and in 2015, positions were expanded to 25.
In relation to the performance of students of PPGE, in 2014, 80% of them were working in the Basic and Higher Education and 10% were enrolled in doctorate in other Brazilian institutions.
The permanent faculty is currently made up of 16 PhDs teachers, with 4 more collaborators teachers.
